OACC Business Spotlight-Sierra Translation Services

Oakhurst Area Chamber of Commerce Business Spotlight

COARSEGOLD, CA. — Owner Ed Tuggy started Sierra Translation Services in 1996 when he was living in Angels Camp, Calaveras County. But he put it on the back burner soon to take a full-time job here in Ahwahnee and provide for his growing family. He resumed operations in late 2020 after being laid off from a publishing house in Fresno.

Ed answered a few questions, to allow us to get to know his business better.

Where is your business located and what area do you service? My office is located in my home in Coarsegold. I can service publishing houses anywhere in the world.

How many employees do you have? I have only freelance contractors. Currently, I have two, and hope to add more soon. Are you currently hiring? I’m not hiring any employees currently. I may hire freelance translators when I get more clients.

Ed Tuggy, owner of Sierra Translation Services

What service(s) do you provide? My focus is to translate books from Spanish to English and English to Spanish. I have also provided English-to-Portuguese translations and can find freelancers for many other languages. I can translate other types of materials: letters, brochures, webpages, eyewitness testimony, and stories. My finished product is carefully edited and proofread. I’ve been in charge of or helped to produce 92 published bilingual book projects. I can also format your manuscript or document with style tags in Microsoft Word, which gives it a good foundation for an entire project.

What are your business goals for the balance of 2022 and into 2023?

  • To get certified by the American Translators Association.
  • To find about one project a month to stay busy.
  • To find book translation projects with one of the big five publishers.

Who is your typical client?  My typical client is a publisher of books, thus far Christian-based to some degree. The projects that I have translated the most are motivational, inspirational, self-help, self-improvement, and success-driven. I’ve also done projects about improving marriage and the family, psychology self-help, and political memoirs.

What services/events do you wish the Chamber provided? Do you offer business startup mentors?

Are you or are you willing to get involved in Chamber activities? Which ones?  I attended the mixer last week. I’m still getting acquainted with the other activities.
