COARSEGOLD — A new, family-run pharmacy is coming to Coarsegold’s Historic Village.

The Bass family, who’ve operated San Joaquin Drug in Planada for nearly 20 years, are planning to open a second location later this year in Coarsegold.

Mary Bass, one of the owners, said the new pharmacy will be called Yosemite Drug “because we like to run our business more like the old-fashioned, traditional drug stores. We feel like there’s a real need in the community for a local pharmacy like that.”

Bass said this week that preparations are well under way to open in the 1,700-square-foot storefront where Coarsegold Wellness and Compounding had been operating until last year.

“We’re hoping to be able to keep up at least some of the compounding that went on there before,” said Bass, whose husband Mike and daughter Katie are both pharmacists and will staff the new Coarsegold pharmacy.

Mary Bass will manage the store, which will also employ several others including Katie’s husband Jeff Meyer, Jr., who will handle marketing for the new business.

The family is hoping to be open in Coarsegold sometime in June.

“We’ve turned in our application to the pharmacy board and expect to be approved,” Mary Bass said. “We’d like to open as soon as possible but we really have no control over how long the approval process may take.”

Bass said the family is “still trying to finalize some of the logistics” with regard to how the new Coarsegold pharmacy will be laid out.

“We haven’t totally figured out how the front end will be set up,” she said. “We’ll probably carry some light medical supplies and [over-the-counter] medications like aspirin.”

Bass said the new store will also offer immunization clinics and health fairs.

Mary and Mike Bass opened their pharmacy in Planada off Highway 140 in 2000.

“We’re used to mountain town living,” Mary said, “and we’ve always been big proponents of doing all we can to give back to the community.”
