New Driver in the Family? Oakhurst CHP Offers Free Safety Class

The Sept. 18 class brings teens and parents together to discuss safer decisions behind the wheel.

Getting a driver’s license brings new independence for teenagers—and plenty for families to talk about. An upcoming free class in Oakhurst gives new drivers and their parents a chance to have those conversations with the California Highway Patrol.

The Oakhurst CHP office will host a Start Smart driver safety class Friday, Sept. 18, from 6:30–8:30 p.m., at 40500 Redbud Drive.

Designed for newly licensed and soon-to-be-licensed teen drivers, the interactive session will cover defensive driving, collision prevention, the dangers of distracted and impaired driving, and what to expect during a traffic stop. At least one parent or guardian must attend with the student, according to the local class announcement published by Sierra Sun Times.

The parent’s seat in the classroom is part of the program’s purpose. CHP describes Start Smart as an opportunity for adults to learn how to support their teens, reinforce safe driving practices and understand the responsibilities that come with a young driver’s growing independence.

The statewide program also addresses common factors in teen crashes, seat belt use and the consequences of risky decisions. Officers draw on their experiences with collisions involving young drivers to help connect those lessons to real situations. California Highway Patrol

For families preparing for a first license—or adjusting to a teenager already driving—the class offers time to focus together on habits that matter every time someone gets behind the wheel.

Space is limited. To reserve a spot, call the Oakhurst CHP office at 559-658-6590.
