New CHP Station Construction In Oakhurst

Just across Highway 49 from the rumored (and that would be false) Walmart/Target construction site just east of Kaiser, there’s a whole lot of building going on. Just in case you don’t know what it is (I looked for a sign and they weren’t sayin’) this is the new Oakhurst area office of the California Highway Patrol.

The project, which is scheduled for completion in November of 2012, is being constructed on a 2 acre site owned by the State at the corner of Highway 49 and Redbud Drive. The 13,850 sq. ft. facility will consist of a 2-story office and auto shop building, a 120-foot communications tower and foundation, a single-story storage/generator/radio building, along with public and secured parking. In addition, F&H Construction, who was awarded the contract, will be installing a new emergency generator with propane tanks, fire pump, and fuel island with an above-ground storage tank, canopy and photovoltaic system, with a surrounding fencing and landscaping improvements.

For the past 10 years, the CHP has been doing business out of a double-wide trailer in Coarsegold, and sharing a parking lot with Cal Trans. Their new digs will certainly be a step up.

With the new Sheriff’s station just across the highway and now the CHP moving in, we probably all feel safer already! But you’d better slow your roll heading out of Oakhurst on Highway 49.
