Mountain Jewish Community Celebrates The High Holidays

Submitted by Susan Rappaport —

CENTRAL SIERRA — Intertwined within the larger tapestry of our Sierra foothill communities is the small strand of the Mountain Jewish Community. We are a community made up of individuals who come from diverse Jewish backgrounds with different levels of observance

Although we are scattered throughout the towns of Mariposa, Ahwahnee, Oakhurst, Coarsegold, North Fork, O’Neals and Yosemite Lakes Park, and do not have a religious leader or building, we feel connected to each other through a shared faith and culture grounded in Torah (what the Christian world refers to as the Old Testament).

In October we will be coming together to celebrate the High Holidays, which include Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year and Yom Kippur the Day of Atonement. Our services are held at a home near Bass Lake. Anyone who is Jewish, who would like to join us, is welcome. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary.

Below is the schedule for the High Holiday services:

Monday, Oct. 3: Rosh Hashanah service beginning at 9:30 a.m. and ending about 1:00. Pot luck lunch following the service.

Tuesday, Oct. 11: Erev Yom Kippur service (Kol Nidre) beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Wednesday, Oct. 12: Yom Kippur morning service beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Yizchor (memorial service) beginning about 1 p.m.

Late afternoon discussion: beginning about 4:30 p.m.

Neilah: closing service beginning about 6:30 p.m.

Breaking fast together after dark (pot luck).

In addition to holiday celebrations, we have a weekly women’s Torah study.
