Mountain Heritage Days And Parade Planning Update

Boy Scouts march in Mountain Heritage Days Parade

OAKHURST — With the 20th Annual Mountain Heritage Days coming up a month from now, exciting plans continue to be made and fun work days are approaching. For anyone interested in joining in with preparation, arranging for a booth, having a float in the parade, or volunteering to help out on the day of the event, there’s still some time to act on that impulse.

Mountain Heritage Days will take place this year on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 16 and 17, with the annual parade on School Road starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday. The theme is “Saving The Past For The Future.”

The headquarters for Mountain Heritage Days is in the research library building at Fresno Flats Historical Village and Park. That’s where you can talk to organizers and volunteers including Gwen Dunn, head of the Heritage Days committee, and also pick up flyers, posters, dinner tickets to buy or sell and vendor or parade applications.

Meanwhile, good news from Sierra Sunrise Rotary as they have chosen to sponsor the YHS Spirit Award at this year’s parade.

Members of the Oakhurst Sierra Sunrise Rotary Club are arranging for a perpetual trophy and a $50 cash prize for the best Heritage Days Parade entry from Yosemite High School. The award will be up for grabs to any recognized club, band or marching group on campus. The judging includes best school spirit, use of color on a float and/or performance.

The triumphant club will have the satisfaction of winning, along with the perpetual trophy itself until June 1, 2017. The winning club will also be presented a Rotary check for $50. The YHS Spirit entry is a new parade category and thus, the usual $15 entry feel will be waived for clubs that apply. For more information contact Jackie Mallouf at mallouf@sti.net.
