O’NEALS — On Saturday, Nov. 5 at Minarets High School, Victoria Giffen and Molly Leeper will be putting on their senior project, a 5k color run called A Running Canvas.

This event is designed to accommodate everyone. Whether you just want to get out and do something active while the weather’s still nice, or you’re a trained athlete, this event is for all skill levels!

One hundred percent of the profits from this event will go to the Epilepsy Foundation. Epilepsy is a medical condition in which someone has recurring seizures.

As a small child, Victoria, one of the event organizers, was diagnosed with epilepsy. The diagnosis changed her life drastically. She suddenly had countless doctors’ appointments, her academic performance declined in elementary school, and even the simplest teenage milestone of getting her driver’s license was delayed by the effects of the condition.

ef-logo-fb-shareSince discovering the Epilepsy Foundation, Victoria has reached a new level of understanding her condition, and has come to realize that the best way to help others struggling with epilepsy is to speak up and spread awareness.

The Foundation helps those affected in many ways, including educating the public on what the disease is, helping to find new treatments, advocating for legal rights for epileptics, and more. The cause has become near and dear to the hearts of everyone involved with it.

So, what is a color run, anyway? Glad you asked! In a color run, different shades of color paint are tossed at you as you go past each paint station, located at each kilometer. Starting with yellow and working your way through the spectrum, you will soon be covered in human-safe colored paint! The experience is something you won’t soon forget.

In fact, the inspiration for this event was the Ghana Run, a color run held at Minarets in 2014. The organizers of A Running Canvas were so impressed by this event that they chose to model their race after the Ghana, that took place their freshman year.

How do you register? Head to the official event website, arunningcanvas.eventbrite.com, and sign up! Space is limited, so sign up the sooner the better!

Not able to attend the event, but still want to contribute? You can make a donation on the registration website. The Epilepsy Foundation is a cause worth running for, so join The Running Canvas 2016 on Nov. 5.

Hope to see you there!
