Miami Mountain Fire Lookout Volunteer Meeting Cancelled

NIPINNAWASEE — The Miami Mountain Fire Lookout Volunteer Meeting scheduled for Saturday (May 9) has been canceled “due to social distancing measures,” according to Franny Adams, U.S. Forest Service fire prevention technician with Patrol 52.

“At this time we will not be allowing new volunteers to staff this year, but if things do get better we will reassess,” Adams added. “We would not be able to conduct training in the tower for new volunteers and adhere to the social distancing measures.”

Miami Mountain, a lookout tower located northwest of Nipinnawasee, is staffed throughout the fire season by Forest Service volunteers.

The lookout station is a tremendous asset to the mountain community as the tower provides unobstructed views of Nipinnawasee, Ahwahnee, Bailey Flats, Raymond, Coarsegold and Oakhurst in Madera County — and Ponderosa Basin, Usona, Bootjack, Lush Meadows, Mariposa and Oakgrove in Mariposa County.
