Memorial Day Ceremonies Planned at all four cemeteries in the Mountain Area

OAKHURST – The Marine Corps League (#1121) in Oakhurst together with the Veterans of Foreign Wars (#8743) will be hosting the annual Avenue of the Flags for Memorial Day (May 31) at Oakhill Cemetery.

“We are seeking veterans and local families to help put up the flags at 8:00 a.m. and take them down at 4:00,” said Maryann Enciso, the organizations Vice-Commandant.

The event also will include Memorial Day Ceremonies conducted by retired Colonel Jerry Bosworth at four cemeteries in the Mountain Area. Joe Wilson the Commandant of the Marine Corps League and Ralph Capone the Commander of the VFW will also be participating.

These ceremonies are to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our Country.  The ceremony consists of a prayer by our Chaplin, a reading, and the placement of a flag on a veteran’s grave, followed by three rifle volleys and the playing of Taps.

The times and locations are as follows:

0900   The Indian Cemetery at the Wassama Round House in Ahwahnee.

1000   The Oakhill Cemetery in Oakhurst.

1100   The Picayune Cemetery above the Casino.

1300   The North Fork Cemetery.

“Our time-honored tradition is to put up the flags every Memorial Day to honor our fallen heroes, Enciso said. “we would like to continue this tradition for our community.”
