Mariposa Man Dies In Head-On Crash On Highway 49

MARIPOSA – One man was killed and another injured in a head-on collision that shut down Highway 49 South this afternoon.

Just after 1 p.m., a Volvo garbage truck, driven by a 64-year-old man, was northbound just north of Wass Road approaching a right-hand curve in the road.

A Subaru Forester, driven by an 82-year-old man from Mariposa, was southbound entering the same curve.

As the Subaru rounded the curve, it crossed over the double yellow lines into the northbound lane and crashed head-on into the Volvo, according to CHP.

The two vehicles and the debris from the crash blocked both lanes and the roadway was shut down between Tip Top Road and Woodland.

The driver of the Subaru was trapped in the vehicle and suffered fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Volvo suffered what were described as moderate injuries and was transported to John C. Fremont Hospital in Mariposa.

There were no other occupants in either vehicle.

The roadway was closed for nearly four hours as officers conducted their investigation, which remains ongoing.
