Mariposa Man Arrested For Striking And Killing Bicyclist

MARIPOSA COUNTY – A Mariposa man has been arrested in connection with the death of a bicyclist after he allegedly struck the rider and then fled the scene.

Wayne Harrison Ruport, 72, was northbound on Highway 49 just south of French Camp Road on Sunday, Aug. 23, at 12:25 p.m., in a 2000 Ford F-150. Shannon Shipman, 46, also of Mariposa, was a passenger in the truck.

Ronald Johnston, 61, of Merced, was riding his bicycle north on Highway 49, and was struck by Ruport’s vehicle. Johnston suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.

Ruport then fled the scene, according to CHP, and was later located at his residence on Bear Valley Road.

Ruport was determined to have been driving under the influence at the time of the collision, and was arrested and booked into the Mariposa County Jail for Felony Hit-and-Run, Felony DUI and Manslaughter with Gross Negligence.

Neither Ruport nor Shipman was injured.
