MARIPOSA — This is the inaugural year for the Mariposa Go West Festival in the historic and charming California gold rush town named with the Spanish word for “butterfly.”

The festival will take place on Saturday, Oct. 1, throughout the downtown area of Mariposa, say organizers, with “gunslingers, an Indian village, gold panning competitions, vendors, music, line dancing, and other fun-for-the-whole-family events.”

The Mariposa Museum and History Center will be open so visitors can see an authentic gold stamp mill in operation.

“Docents in period 19th-century costume will be on hand to answer questions, tell Mariposa ghost stories, and keep the fun rolling. Join in the fun, dress up in your best western style or period costume and come on down. Visit Mariposa on October 1 to celebrate heritage and have a grand old time!”
