Mariposa County Seeks Applicants for District Attorney
Mariposa County is looking for its next District Attorney, with just over two weeks remaining for qualified candidates to apply for the position.
The Mariposa County Board of Supervisors opened an application process to fill the unexpired term following the resignation of District Attorney Walter Wall, which became effective June 30.
Applications will be accepted through 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 31.
Unlike a regularly scheduled election for the office, the current process will place the appointment in the hands of the Board of Supervisors.
The county has scheduled two public hearings as part of that process. The first will take place Sept. 8 at 2 p.m., followed by a second hearing Sept. 15 at 2 p.m.
A Key Role in County Government
The District Attorney’s Office serves as Mariposa County’s primary criminal prosecution agency.
According to the county, the office represents the people of California in criminal prosecutions within Mariposa County and is responsible for filing criminal charges and appearing in felony and misdemeanor cases, trials and sentencing proceedings.
The office also works with other parts of the local criminal justice system and has responsibilities involving victims and witnesses.
The vacancy follows Wall’s resignation earlier this summer. Wall announced in March that he had accepted another position and planned to step down effective June 30.
The Board of Supervisors subsequently approved the current application process to fill the remainder of the term.
Applications Open Through Aug. 31
Prospective applicants can obtain the application materials through Mariposa County’s website.
The county lists the timeline as:
- Aug. 31 at 5 p.m. — Application deadline
- Sept. 8 at 2 p.m. — First public hearing
- Sept. 15 at 2 p.m. — Second public hearing

The appointment will determine who leads an office responsible for prosecuting criminal cases throughout Mariposa County until the current term expires.
