Man Drowns In Swimming Hole

MADERA COUNTY — The Madera County Sheriff’s Office is reporting tragic news in the wake of activity over the mid-week Independence Day holiday.

At about 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 4, the Sheriff’s Office received a call for service for a search and rescue at a swimming hole in the area of Highway 145 and Bonnie Way in Madera (see map below).

It was reported that an adult male swimmer had entered the water and had not returned to his group.

CHP’s H40 helicopter scoured the area, but the crew was unable to spot the man from the air.

The Madera County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team responded to the scene and they were able to locate the man in the water. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The identity of the victim is currently being determined by Madera County Sheriff’s Identification Technicians, and will be withheld pending notification of next of kin.

It is unknown at this time if drugs or alcohol played a role in the incident. The investigation remains ongoing.
