MADERA COUNTY – The Madera County Transportation Commission (MCTC) asks for public input during a special meeting on Wednesday, Apr. 22, from 3 – 5 p.m. The subject of Unmet Transit Needs will be explored during the meeting located in Madera at 2001 Howard Road, Suite 201.
MCTC is the Regional Transportation Planning Agency (RTPA) for Madera County, responsible for the administration of the Transportation Development Act (TDA) funds. According to MCTC documents, TDA funds are acquired through ¼ percent of the statewide sales tax, and are the primary funding source for most transit systems. Transit systems refer to publicly funded transportation, both fixed route and on-demand.
In Eastern Madera County, people can use Madera County Connection (MCC) which connects North Fork, Bass Lake, Oakhurst, Coarsegold, and YLP to the Intermodal Center in Madera or Valley Children’s Hospital where you can pick up FAX. Elsewhere in Madera County, the community relies on Madera Area Express (MAX), Dial-a-Ride (DAR), Chowchilla Area Transit (CAT).
MCTC is looking for testimony on any issues related to schedule times, bus stops, and anything else related to the system. The agency will hear all comments from the public during the meeting, and the transit operators will use the information to make future improvements in the system.
If a comment is not determined to be an unmet need, the information could still prove helpful. For example, people may request benches or shelters at their stops so they don’t have to stand in the rain or the hot sun. MAX has enhanced 40 bus stops and are working on 40 more, according to MCTC. Neither of those were officially determined to be “unmet needs,” but the comments still served to help the transit operators make improvements.
