Madera Man Sentenced For Attempted 1st Degree Murder

MADERA – Carlos Maldonado, 37, of Madera, was sentenced to State Prison last week for attempted first degree murder, and three additional felony counts of assault with a firearm, together with special allegations for personal use of a firearm and great bodily injury, according to District Attorney Michael R. Keitz. At Maldonado’s trial, Assistant District Attorney Miguel Valdovinos presented evidence that on the evening of Mar. 18, 2012, Maldonado and his brother, Timothy Maldonado, 35, of Lemoore, went to the Madera residence of Michael Greer, 44, to settle a dispute.

Greer challenged Carlos to fight and they traded blows. Carlos then drew a gun and began shooting. Greer was shot four times and Ronald Blakney, Roshena Blakney, and Tarmara Thomas were each wounded. Carlos fled the scene but, was later apprehended.

On Friday, the Madera Superior Court sentenced Malonado to 74 years and 8 months to life in state prison for his attempted murder and three other counts of assault with a deadly weapon.

“Maldonado’s lengthy sentence is a result of the ‘use a gun and you are done’ statute, which was designed to stop criminal violence with a firearm,” said District Attorney Keitz. “People who choose to use a firearm in the commission of a crime need to know they will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and will face severe consequences for their actions.”
