Madera County Honors Fallen Officers

MADERA COUNTY – On Wednesday, May 14, at 11:30 a.m., Madera County will honor the Peace Officers who have died in the line of duty at the 7th annual Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony.

The program will include a flyover and a reading of the names of those who died in the line of duty in 2013. There will also be a wreath laying to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the citizens of Madera County.

Those who plan to take part in the wreath laying ceremony will include Margot Sciacqua, the daughter of Madera County Sheriff’s Matron Lucille Helm, who was the first female in the state of California to die in the line of duty. She was killed in July 1959.

The family of Madera Police Officer Denny Shannon, who was killed in April 1954, will include his two sons, Mike and Matthew Shannon, as well as his grandchildren.

The ceremony will take place at Courthouse Park across from Madera Superior Court on Yosemite Avenue, and is open to the public.
