
North Fork 7th Team: Moises Agundez, Lauren Bryant, Thor Goodman, Ryan Hough, Vincent Mellana, Kaia Owen, Jeremiah Stott, Josiah Waltner
COUNTY — The 2016 Madera County Academic Pentathlon culminated with the Super Quiz and Awards Ceremony on Thursday, Mar. 10, naming North Fork School this year’s champion in both the 7th and 8th grade competitions.
The North Fork 7th grade team included Moises Agundez, Lauren Bryant, Thor Goodman, Ryan Hough, Vincent Mellana, Kaia Owen, Jeremiah Stott, and Josiah Waltner.
The North Fork 8th grade team included Hunter Ahrens, Joshua Barba, Alexia Berry, Orion Cicoletti, Jayci Coon, Isaiah Gibson, Kai Hansen, Luna Moreno, and Kathryn Odgers.
Their coaches were Katie Kelly and Carrie Waltner.
More than 200 students participated in this the five-event academic competition, held on Mar. 5 and ending on Mar. 10. Students competed in the areas of fine arts, literature, science, social science and speech. This year’s topic was India.
Coarsegold Elementary School came in second place in the 7th grade competition and Wasuma School placed third. Mountain Home School Charter came in second in the 8th grade competition and Rivergold Elementary School placed third.
Coarsegold Elementary School received first place in the 7th grade Super Quiz competition. North Fork Elementary School placed first in the 8th grade competition. Thomas Jefferson Middle School came in second in the 7th grade competition and North Fork Elementary School and Rivergold Elementary School tied for third place. In 8th grade competition, Mountain Home School Charter came in second place and Spring Valley School placed third
“We are so proud of Madera County’s middle school students,” said Dianna Marsh, Assistant Superintendent, Madera County Office of Education.
“This year’s competition was fierce and these students handled it with exceptional sportsmanship, team spirit and dedication. We are so fortunate to have such wonderful support from our community and districts for student academic events.”
Each team consisted of up to nine students per team. Students had to compete in all five events. Teams had been practicing for this event since November.
