Local Groups Partner for Mountain Area COVID-19 Food Drive

OAKHURST — This week the Eastern Madera County Rotary Club, the Mountain Area Youth Organization, The Manna House, the Soroptimist Club, The Elderberry House, Larry Smith and his crew from Custom Design Construction and the Madera County Board of Supervisors partnered with Madera County Food Bank Director Ryan McWheter and his team to have food both available for pickup — and delivered — to residents in need across eastern Madera County.

On Wednesday, representatives from the coalition of community groups mobilized to offload and pass out a semi-trailer load of much needed supplies outside the Oakhurst Community Center and at the Chukchansi Gold Resort & Casino in Coarsegold.

“We had and are going to continue to have the food drive through distribution centers at the Oakhurst Community Center, North Fork Town Hall, Wasuma Elementary School in Ahwahnee and the parking lot of the Chukchansi Gold Resort & Casino,” said District 5 Supervisor Tom Wheeler, who rolled up his sleeves to unload pallets and help deliver much appreciated supplies to area residents.

“The Rotary Club, Soroptimists and the Elderberry House are delivering to homes of people who can’t or are afraid to leave their residences,” Wheeler added. “I can’t thank my Chief of Staff Bobby Macaulay and his crew enough for making this happen. I also want to thank Jennifer Simmons and Jeff Macaulay (from the Oakhurst Boys & Girls Club) for their commitment to the project. And I’d especially like to thank The Madera County Food Bank for helping get Madera County residents through this COVID-19 pandemic.”
