Linn, Varney Win In Hotly Contested Races

MADERA COUNTY – After many contentious months on the campaign trail, Oakhurst attorney David Linn has defeated incumbent Michael Keitz in the race for Madera County District Attorney, garnering 58 percent of the vote.

In another important contest, Chowchilla Police Chief Jay Varney will become the next Sheriff, beating out Undersheriff Michael Salvador. Varney also won by 58 percent.

Proposition 48 to approve the compact for the North Fork Rancheria of Mono Indians to proceed with plans for a casino on Highway 99 near Madera has failed with 59 percent of voters rejecting the measure.

Just 42 percent of registered voters went to the polls or mailed in their absentee ballots.
