OAKHURST — The Yosemite High School International Baccalaureate (IB) program invites the community to an interdisciplinary showcase on Wednesday, Nov. 9 in the Badger Gallery on campus, from 6 – 8 p.m.

We are living during a divisive time in human history. Politically, environmentally, economically and globally things seem to be at the tipping point. During times like these, the whisper of revolution seems dangerous at best. However, the International Baccalaureate History, Spanish and Art Departments at YHS have decided to come together and reflect upon the revolutionary spirit.

Revolution can come in the form of upheaval and violence in order to insight political change. It did in the case of the Mexican Revolution and it forever changed Mexican government and culture. IB History will present the story of the Mexican Revolution and its lasting impact at the show’s opening.

A revolutionary idea can change the way we look at major aspects of our lives. The Mexican culture celebrates their loved ones on Día de los Muertos. Thinking about death as a celebration of someone’s life and reconnecting annually to those memories is a revolution for humanity’s relationship to mortality. The IB Spanish department will honor this idea in the form of poetry, essays, and Día de los Muertos skeletons. Señor Browning dice “Viva la Revolucîón!”

Self discovery, social critique, and political arts have a long tradition of participating in the dialogue of revolutionary thought and the history of Mexican culture. Like Mexico’s great painters and propagandists, the IB Visual Art Department will join the dialogue of upheaval by turning their lens to our modern global society. Through their artwork students will give voice to their uproar, their revolt, and create work for a new revolution and new generation.

Evan Higgins is Chair of the Art Department at Yosemite High School
