Inside the Mountain House As Renovation Continues

OAKHURST– “The owner cares about the community and wants to lease the building to good, solid people who will bring business here.”

This is the latest on the Mountain House, according to General Contractor Steve Gabbard of  Sun Construction, who highlighted some of the renovations made to the well-known building on the corner of Highway 41 and Bass Lake Road 222.

“The owner, Harold Rothman, is open for leasing to professional offices or a restaurant.”

Originally built in the late 1920s, the 3,500-square foot building has undergone recent improvements that include removal of the bar inside, and the outdoor restroom – also known as the “outhouse.”

The beautiful fireplace has been refaced. If a restaurant were to occupy the building, the kitchen now has a sewage drainage, which can be used for grease traps.

“The windows and doors are all updated,” says Steve. “They are plaid, wood sash, energy efficient and low maintenance.”

Steve adds that what appears to be wood on the outside of the building, gracefully designed with rustic charm, is actually highly fire resistant concrete.

“It should stay looking nice for a very long time.”

North end parking lot improvement

On the north end of the property where the parking lot is located, the Sun Construction crew dug out the old concrete and will be laying down new concrete with a side ramp for accessibility.

Steve says he is grateful for the work of Rick Webb at Big Valley Roofing, Timmy Egan of Egan Excavating, Loveland Masonry, and Oakhurst Door and Millwork.

“It has been a pleasure to work with the owner,” he adds. “I know that anyone who will do business with him will enjoy it.”

The Mountain House restaurant employed as many as 20 people at one time, and closed in 2009 during the economic downturn. Locals and visitors alike were appreciative of the delicious meals and personal service provided at The Mountain House, counting on it for breakfast and as a great place for friends families to indulge, especially on the weekends.

The Mountain House is located at the intersection of Highway 41 along the south route to Yosemite National Park, and Road 222 to Bass Lake. The address is 42515 Highway 41, Oakhurst, CA 93644.

Anyone interested in leasing can contact owner, Harold Rothman at (562) 221-4837.
