HOW Oakhurst to Honor Georgia Kopel at May Dinner
The Oakhurst community will have an opportunity to rally around one of its own this month as Helping One Woman Oakhurst (HOW) names Georgia Kopel as its May recipient.
The event will take place Tuesday, May 19 at 6 p.m. at the Oakhurst Community Center, where residents are invited to come together in support of Georgia during a difficult chapter in her life.
Georgia’s story is one of strength, compassion, heartbreak, and resilience.
Seven years ago, Georgia and her husband John moved to Oakhurst after her retirement following 27 years with the Girl Scouts of America. Like so many who arrive in the mountain area, they quickly fell in love with the beauty and sense of community here. They purchased a home near the Deadwood turnout, where the iconic “Welcome to Oakhurst” sign overlooks one of the area’s breathtaking views.
But shortly after beginning that new chapter, Georgia endured tremendous loss. Her mother passed away, followed by the sudden death of John, described as the love of her life. The grief was overwhelming.
Even through that hardship, Georgia chose to give back.
She became active with both the Eastern Madera County SPCA and the Sierra Senior Society, finding healing in helping others. Friends say that even while navigating her own pain, Georgia continued to offer compassion and service to those around her.
Then came another life-changing challenge.
Last December, Georgia was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer. She is currently undergoing her second round of chemotherapy while awaiting surgery. Her treatments require weekly trips to Fresno, and she remains deeply grateful for the many friends who have stepped in to drive her to and from appointments.
Through it all, Georgia’s family has remained a steady source of support. Her son, daughter, and grandchildren have stood beside her throughout the journey. Her daughter Jenna is currently living with her, and Georgia remains in close contact with her son and grandchildren.
Those who know Georgia also know her spirit has not faded. Before beginning chemotherapy, she donated her waist-length hair to Locks of Love. Friends say she wears being bald with confidence and humor—still thinking of others, even in the middle of her own battle.
That spirit is exactly why the HOW community is stepping forward this month.
Helping One Woman Oakhurst is a local chapter of a grassroots organization built on a simple idea: when many people each give a little, it can make a meaningful difference in someone’s life. Each month, HOW selects a woman in the community facing hardship and hosts a dinner gathering where supporters provide encouragement, friendship, and financial help.
The organization’s motto reflects that mission: one woman with $10 can buy another woman lunch, ten women can help with groceries, and one hundred women can truly change a life.
Residents who would like to attend the May event are asked to RSVP in advance through MySOSEvent.com, as prepaid tickets are required. The sign-up deadline is Thursday, May 14 at 11 a.m. Organizers note that the dinner purchase does not include the suggested $10 minimum recipient gift, which is given directly to Georgia. Cash, check, and Venmo donations will be accepted, along with raffle and auction item contributions.
Community members unable to attend can still help by donating raffle prizes, auction items, or direct monetary gifts.
Residents are encouraged to come out on May 19 and help surround Georgia with love, encouragement, and practical support.
Sometimes the strongest people are the ones who keep giving while carrying the heaviest burdens. This month, Oakhurst has a chance to give back to Georgia Kopel.
