OAKHURST – An Oakhurst woman was fatally injured last night in a head-on collision on Highway 41 just north of Winding Way.
Mary Williams, 82, of Oakhurst was northbound on Highway 41 in a 1999 Toyota Corolla on Monday, Aug, 19, at approximately 8:28 p.m., traveling about 35 mph, when for unknown reasons, she allowed her car to cross over the double yellow lines into the southbound lane.
Williams’s vehicle side-swiped a southbound 2013 Ford Escape, occupied by Valentin Popow, 24, and Erwin Popow, 21, both from Germany. Neither the driver nor the passenger in the Escape was injured.
After returning to the northbound lane, Williams’s Toyota again crossed back into oncoming traffic where it collided head-on with a 2012 Ford Fusion, also traveling at approximately 35 mph, driven by Marina Wilson, 40, of Brooklyn, NY. Both Wilson and passenger Daniel Marino, 34, of Bilbao, Spain, sustained minor injuries and were attended to by Sierra Ambulance EMTs.
Williams sustained fatal injuries as a result of the second collision, and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Alcohol and/or drugs are not suspected to have been a contributing factor in the crash, and the incident remains under investigation.
Highway 41 was closed for nearly two hours.
