Grace Community Church Marks 80 Years in North Fork
Over the past several months, Sierra News Online has followed the story of Grace Community Church from a small group of North Fork residents gathering in 1946 through decades of growth, change and community involvement.
Now, as the church prepares to celebrate its 80th anniversary on Sept. 12, the final chapter of that history looks less at a particular decade and more at what those eight decades have meant beyond the church doors.
It’s a history that church organizers say includes generations of North Fork residents giving their time, skills and resources not only to keep Grace Community Church going, but to support the community around it.
Eight Decades in North Fork
Earlier installments in this series traced the church from its beginnings in 1946 through the arrival of an Army chapel that was dismantled, transported to North Fork and reconstructed along Road 200.
The stories continued through the creation of the Friendship Circle, construction and remodeling projects, youth programs, changing pastors and the many people whose contributions helped shape the church.
Along the way, another theme continued to surface: community service.
For this final installment, church organizers provided a list of organizations, programs and causes Grace Community Church has supported through the years.
They are quick to point out that it isn’t a comprehensive list.
Even so, it’s a long one.
A Long List of Community Connections
Among the local organizations and programs supported by the church are the North Fork Volunteer Fire Department, North Fork School, Sierra Mono Museum, Camp Tamarack, North Fork Boosters, Citizens on Patrol and Sober Graduation.
The church has also supported North Fork School’s eighth-grade field trip, Christmas food baskets, firefighter meals, after-school tutoring, community suppers, food giveaways, a food pantry, firewood giveaways and other efforts assisting local residents.
Beyond North Fork, church members have contributed to fire, hurricane and earthquake relief and supported organizations and programs including Heifer Project International, Church World Service, the Hunger Action Fund, One Great Hour of Sharing, Veterans of the Cross and Neighbors in Need.
Taken together, the list provides a different way of looking at the church’s 80-year history.
Buildings, pastors and milestones mark the passage of time.
But so do meals served, students supported, families helped and neighbors who showed up when someone needed a hand.
Church organizers say that community involvement reflects a goal that stretches back to its founders: providing a church where people with differing views, experiences and walks of life can find a welcome and worship together.
An 80th Anniversary Celebration
Grace Community Church will bring those eight decades together Saturday, Sept. 12, with an anniversary celebration from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at the church in North Fork.
The afternoon will include an ice cream social, live music by Sugar Pine, a fashion presentation by “North Fork Maqui,” a look back at the church’s history and surprise guests.
Organizers are especially hoping people who grew up in the church, along with children of its founding members, will attend and share their memories.

The Next Chapter
The September celebration will mark 80 years since a group of North Fork residents came together to establish what eventually became Grace Community Church.
It also brings this SNO history series to a close.
Over the course of the series, the names, buildings and programs have changed. Some traditions disappeared, while others survived for generations.
But one thread runs through much of the history Grace Community Church has shared: people giving their time to something they believed mattered to their neighbors.
Eight decades after the church began, organizers say they hope to continue the vision of its founders by remaining a place where people from different backgrounds and experiences can come together.
And with its anniversary approaching, the celebration offers North Fork an opportunity not only to look back at the church’s history, but to recognize the generations of community members who helped create it.
