Rib Fest 2012 – Where a dirty face is celebrated!

The 13th annual Rib Fest is taking place on Saturday June 23, 2012 and that makes Laura Graham the busiest woman in Oakhurst for the next few days. Laura is the Facilities Manager for the Oakhurst Community Center, and along with 30 plus volunteers, they are hoping to make this will be the most successful year yet.Volunteers come from many different community organizations. The Soroptimists are in charge of side dishes, Senior Center volunteers take care of the garlic bread, and the Mountain Community Women handle dessert, which is homemade cookies and ice cream. Even young people are in on it, the Boy Scouts of America have been recruited as servers. Of course, we cannot forget those wonderful service club members who brave heat, smoke and hours on their feet to provide the best ribs in the mountains.

Dale Miller is this year’s Master of Ceremonies and according to Laura he will be busy too. Dale will be coordinating the bids for the many auction items donated by the community. The evening’s festivities will include live and silent auctions as well as raffles! This year there will be a special raffle for a glider made from 125 year old local reclaimed wood that has been re-milled and turned into a thing of beauty. Tickets are only $5.00 and Laura says the lucky winner is sure to be the envy of all their neighbors.

The Community Center is busy in one way or another seven days a week, providing a meeting place for events from weddings to woodcarvers. The Rib Fest is the only fund raiser for the Community Center and they really want to make the most of it, so come on out, show your support and take a picture of your friend’s dirty face!
