French Fire And Firefighting Book At Scenic Byway Annual Meeting

NORTH FORK – Learn about the initial attack, management and future plans for the French Fire restoration at the annual meeting of the Sierra Vista Scenic Byway Association on Monday, Apr. 27, at 6:30 p.m. at the North Fork School.

Burt Stalter, USFS Fuels Specialist on the Bass Lake Ranger District of the Sierra National Forest, will be one of the featured speakers.

Author Marcia Freedman will also share her new book, Fighting Fire in the Sierra National Forest, which traces the history of firefighting and fire management on the forest. The book will be available for purchase and a signature from the author.

Fighting Fire in the Sierra National ForestThe French Fire started on July 28, 2014 in the Rock Creek drainage along the Sierra Vista Scenic Byway, and burned nearly 14,000 acres before being brought under control.

Stalter will talk about the condition of the forest before the French Fire, it’s origin, it’s spread, the initial attack and management of the fire, as well as the preservation and destruction of historical sites and what the future holds for forest restoration.

A brief business meeting will precede the presentation, and free refreshments will be provided.
