Free Tai Chi Workshop

COARSEGOLD – Local instructor Don Cirillo will offer a free one hour demonstration of Tai Chi, an ancient Chinese method of harmonizing body and mind. The workshop is set for Tuesday, Aug. 4 from 10 – 11 a.m. at the Coarsegold Community Center. There is no charge for this demo class.

The introductory program will explain Tai Chi and its many health and fitness benefits suitable for all ages, and particularly mature adults. Some of those benefits include improved balance, concentration, fitness, relaxation, circulation and harmony of body and mind. Organizers say those in attendance will experience the calm, fluid, slow motion movements of Tai Chi, and be calmly guided through some of the basic movements.

“This is a perfect chance to find out if Tai Chi is for you,” says Don Cirillo, an advanced practitioner of traditional Chinese Yang Style Tai Chi.

“My study of Tai Chi began after a friend told me that his practice of Tai Chi helped eliminate his back pain,” Don explains. “Having had a back injury myself from 2 car accidents in the 80s, I began taking classes. I loved it right away. After a few months, I was taking 3 classes a week and practicing regularly at home, and I have never stopped since.”

Don Cirillo Tai ChiDon is a recent transplant to this area from Ojai in Ventura County. Having learned Tai Chi from Clifton Gore of Ojai and Clifton’s teacher, grand master Kai Ying Tung of Culver City, Don is now happily bringing his experience to the mountains.

“When I moved to Oakhurst in 2014, my teacher told me that it was time for me to teach. It took only a second for me to realize what an honor he had given me. I had become part of a long line of Tai Chi practitioners, who pass down their knowledge face-to-face, person-to-person, in the same way for hundreds of years.”

For questions about the Coarsegold Community Center, call (559) 683-1443, or contact Don Cirillo directly at (559) 642-2582.

“It’s a privilege to be able to give the gift of Tai Chi to others, especially here in the mountains we love.”

Following this one free class, Don will teach Tai Chi Classes weekly in Coarsegold on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Community Center, beginning Tuesday Aug. 11 from 10 – 11 a.m. The fee for taking classes is $10 per class.
