Free Pre-Apprenticeships Through Yosemite Adult School

OAKHURST — The Yosemite Adult School in cooperation with the State Center Adult Education Consortium are pleased to announce there will be a Pre-Apprenticeship training class in Oakhurst beginning Jan. 17, 2017. This may be a good opportunity to start a career in one of the building trades, such as plumbing and pipe-fitting, electrician, carpentry, sheet metal working, and general labor.

This evening program requires a commitment of three hours a night for eight weeks. There is no cost for the program. After successful completion of this program students may receive six national recognized certificates from the Laborers Union as well as a Certificate of Completion from Fresno City College to add to their portfolio for employers. This program is open to anyone over the age of 18, including currently enrolled high school students, and able to meet the physical demands of this type of work.

The structure of the program is trade union based skills and knowledge, say organizers. The things that trade unions look for and expect in their members include a work ethic, being at work and ready to work “when the clock starts,” and giving the employer their money’s worth at the end of the shift. There will be classroom and field instructions with physical labor.

The “requirements” for enrollment and continuation in the program, and ultimately possible employment as a trade union apprentice include 100 percent attendance, valid driver’s license as well as a clean driving record, reliable transportation and being able to pass the entrance exams (math and English) before the program. Drug testing may occur before and random testing during the program.

If a student need remediation, help in studying for and passing the entrance testing, the Adult Education staff can assist with this. Students who also need to complete their high school diploma, can fit into the adult program, as well.

Successful completion of the Pre-Apprenticeship program could result in being offered an apprentice position with one of the trade unions involved in this program.
