OAKHURST — Just before 12:30 p.m., firefighters were called out to reports of a vegetation fire in Oakhurst.
The fire was initially reported at an address across from Oakhill Cemetery, but was located on Highway 49 near Meadow Vista Drive.
Madera County Fire Engine 12 was first at scene at 12:33 and reported a 50×50 spot burning in the grass, with one structure immediately threatened.
CHP planned to shut down both lanes of Highway 49 as firefighters worked on suppressing the fire, but with the quick work by crews, that was not necessary.
By 12:38 p.m., the forward progress was stopped and all engines not already at scene were cancelled, except two state engines.
