Fatal Traffic Accident Near Bootjack

MARIPOSA – A tragic accident on Highway 49 near Bootjack has claimed the life of a Mariposa man and injured two children.

On Friday, Jan. 17, at approximately 5:12 p.m., Thomas Pimentel, 63, of Mariposa was westbound on Indian Peak Road in a 2007 Toyota Corolla, approaching the stop sign at Highway 49.

At the same time, Timothy McFadden, 51, of Ahwahnee was southbound on Highway 49 in a 2010 International, Suburban Propane truck, traveling at about 50 mph, according to CHP.

For unknown reasons, Pimentel ran the stop sign and drove into the southbound lane of Highway 49, directly into the path of the propane truck. Unable to avoid the collision, the propane truck hit the Toyota broadside.

Mr. Pimental sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash and died at the scene. Two juvenile passengers in the Toyota, ages 3 and 5, sustained moderate injuries, and were transported by ambulance to Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera and John C. Fremont in Mariposa. The driver of the truck was not injured.

The Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office responded to assist CHP, and is also the investigating Coroner’s Office. The Mariposa Area CHP Office is investigating the collision.
