Fatal Crash On Highway 41 South Of YLP, Victim Identified

COARSEGOLD — One person was killed and another suffered serious injuries in a nearly head-on crash on Highway 41 this morning.

According to CHP, a man at the front of a long line of northbound vehicles was slowing to turn right into his driveway, just south of the Black Hawk Lodge.

Witnesses told CHP that everyone was traveling at about 50 miles per hour when a Madera woman driving a Chevy HHR in the middle of the line of traffic, slammed on her brakes for unknown reasons.

That action immediately sent the vehicle skidding and it went up the embankment on the east side of the road, slid back down and spun into the southbound lane, where it was t-boned by a southbound Ford Fusion.

The force of the collision flipped the Chevy onto its roof and both vehicles came to rest blocking the southbound lane.

The driver of the Chevy, Ma. Guadalupe Gonzalez Durate, 44, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The passenger in the Ford Fusion, a 16-year-old female, suffered what were described as serious injuries and was transported to Valley Children’s Hospital. She was accompanied by her mother, age 35, the driver of the Ford, who suffered unknown injuries. Both are from Coarsegold.

The accident remains under investigation.
