Fatal Accident Closes Road 222 East Of Old Corral

OAKHURST — A fatal accident involving two vehicles closed Road 222 near Bass Lake between Highway 41 and Road 274 for over two hours Tuesday afternoon.

Just before 3 p.m. reports came in to CHP of a two-car accident on Road 222 at Pettitt Road. When first responders arrived at scene, they found that two people were pinned inside their vehicles.

According to CHP at the scene, a Hyundai SUV was being driven eastbound on Road 222 by a 31-year-old woman from Oakhurst. Just past the Old Corral grocery store, the Hyundai was hit when a Kia sedan crossed over the double yellow line and they collided nearly head-on.

Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to free the driver of the Hyundai. SkyLife air ambulance landed in the middle of Road 222 and airlifted the woman to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno. A 35-year-old male from Oakhurst, who was a passenger in the Hyundai, suffered minor injuries.

The driver of the other vehicle, now identified as 69-year-old Haroleen Sue Bowlan of Oakhurst, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Road 222 was blocked in both directions until about 5:30 p.m.

The accident remains under investigation.
