Explore North Fork’s Old Mill at October Open House

Site tours and project information will give residents a closer look at the former mill property’s evolving role in the community.

Curious about what’s happening at the Old Mill Complex? An upcoming Expo and Open House will give community members an opportunity to explore the site and learn about projects taking place there.

Hosted by the North Fork Community Development Council, the event is scheduled for Saturday, October 3, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Old Mill Complex in North Fork.

An event organizer confirmed that tours of the site will be available during the expo, offering residents a closer look at a property connected to both North Fork’s history and its future.

The former mill property has been the focus of a long-running effort to create space for business and community uses. The CDC has described redevelopment of the 135-acre site as a central part of its work following the mill’s closure. North Fork CDC background

One of the projects associated with that redevelopment is North Fork Community Power, a bioenergy facility designed to turn forest material into electricity and biochar. The project connects the site’s timber-industry past with efforts to find productive uses for woody material generated by forest management.

The project’s website describes a two-megawatt facility using forestry waste from the surrounding Sierra National Forest region. Biochar, another product of the process, can be used in soils. North Fork Community Power

Preserving the property’s history is also part of its future. The proposed Old Mill History Park would commemorate the mill where its main building once stood. As SNO previously reported, planning efforts have included concept drawings and cost estimates developed with assistance from National Park Service landscape architects.

Together, those efforts illustrate the range of interests tied to the Old Mill property: local economic activity, forest resources and the preservation of community history.

The October 3 expo offers residents an opportunity to learn more about the complex firsthand, with site tours adding another way to explore a place many know by name but may not have visited recently.

Local vendors, nonprofit organizations and food trucks are also invited to participate, with booth spaces available at no charge. Participants must provide their own tents, tables, chairs and supplies. Water and electricity will not be available, and food vendors must have the required health permits and licenses.

Those interested in reserving a booth can register through the QR code on the accompanying event flyer.
