Driver Passes Out, Hits Concrete Wall In Oakhurst

OAKHURST — Traffic was slowed in Oakhurst this morning after a pickup pulling a trailer left the roadway and hit the concrete retaining wall at the construction site of the new hotels on Highway 41.

Just after 10:30 a.m., a 46-year-old male, driving a flatbed Chevy 3500 out of Atwater, was northbound on SR-41 approaching Winding Way when, for unknown reasons, he lost consciousness, according to CHP at the scene.

The truck and trailer crossed over the southbound lane and off the roadway into the dirt, where the left front wheel of the flatbed was torn off when it hit a block wall.

The vehicle continued another 40 feet or so, and hit head-on into another block wall.

The first officer at scene reported that the driver was experiencing traumatic breathing problems, but after having an oxygen mask put over his face, the driver began breathing normally.

Sierra Ambulance was quickly on scene and assessed the patient, but the man declined to be transported for treatment. He told CHP he has no history of passing out.

According to CHP, the driver was on his way to work in the Wawona area removing tree debris.

No lanes were blocked due to the accident, but traffic was diverted into the center divide for the safety of first responders.
