Driver Airlifted After Crash On Road 600

AHWAHNEE — A driver who crashed his car on Thursday and then left the scene on foot was airlifted to a valley hospital with lacerations and head injuries.

Ronald Thomas, 56, or Mariposa, was westbound on Road 600 just west of Eagle Drive at about 7 a.m., at what was reported as “a high rate of speed,” when he lost control of his 1995 Mercury and left the roadway.

The vehicle collided with the hillside twice, overturned, and came to rest on its roof partially blocking the eastbound lane.

According to CHP, the driver left the scene and was finally located at about 9:15 a.m., approximately one mile east of the crash location.

Sierra Ambulance responded to the scene, and after evaluating the patient, transported him to the ball field in Raymond where a landing zone was set up for SkyLife air ambulance. Thomas was transported to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno.

The hit and run portion of this crash is still under investigation by CHP, and there was unspecified property damage.
