Dozens Of Lightning Fires Sparked On The SNF

SIERRA NATIONAL FOREST – Last week’s lightning storm ignited 33 fires on the Sierra National Forest Thursday and Friday afternoon. Thirty-two are located on the High Sierra Ranger district and one is located on the Bass Lake Ranger District.

At this time, there are 120 firefighters actively supporting fire suppression on the Sierra, including many who are stationed on the Sierra, plus crews from National Forests all over the state of California including; Stanislaus, Inyo, Angeles, San Bernardino, Sequoia, Los Padres, Eldorado, Mendocino and Cleveland.

Public information staff from the High Sierra Ranger District is also assisting with providing information about all incidents.

At this time the safety record for all the fires is outstanding, with no injuries reported and no structures lost.

The Sierra National Forest will remain staffed with an initial attack team throughout the 4th of July holiday weekend to put out any new starts.

To serve the high volume of visitors to the Sierra National Forest celebrating the 4th of July, there are also Visitor Information Specialists working on both Districts through the holiday.

“Our goal is to provide a world-class experience to all those visiting the Sierra,” said Forest Supervisor Dean Gould. “Whether visiting or living on the Sierra, you can take great comfort knowing that each day, an incredibly dedicated staff is working to support and protect you.”

As was announced on June 29, the Sierra National Forest is currently in fire restrictions, which state that campfires are only permitted in designated recreation areas. For complete information on fire restrictions and areas where they are permitted on the Sierra, click here.
