Deputy’s Daughter Accidentally Shoots Sister

FRESNO – The 8-year-old daughter of a Madera County Sheriff’s deputy is hospitalized and in stable condition after being accidentally shot by her 10-year-old sister yesterday morning in northwest Fresno.

According to Sheriff Jay Varney, the deputy was getting ready for work and his service weapon was lying on the bed. There was no clip in the gun, but there was one bullet in the chamber.

The 10-year-old reportedly picked up the gun and pulled the trigger, shooting her sister in the lower abdomen.

Sheriff Varney says the incident is being investigated by the Fresno Police Department, and the Madera County Sheriff’s Office will conduct their own internal investigation.

The officer involved, a veteran lieutenant with the department, will not be placed on administrative leave since he was not directly involved in the discharge of the firearm, says Varney. He will be “allowed any time off he needs to participate in the healing of his daughter,” and attend to his family following this tragic event.
