Delays During Repairs At Big Oak Flat Tunnels

YOSEMITE – Repairs to the Big Oak Flat Tunnels in Yosemite National Park, located along the Big Oak Flat Road/Highway 120, are scheduled to begin on Tuesday, Feb. 17.

The historic tunnels, completed in 1937, consist of three tunnels along the Big Oak Flat Road.

A majority of the repairs will occur inside the tunnel. During the construction period, from Tuesday, Feb. 17 to Tuesday, May 20, there will be incremental traffic delays.

The scheduled work is part of the Big Oak Flat Tunnel Preservation Project and will include repairs to sections of the tunnel wall, floor, and ceiling, sealing of tunnel linings, improving the drainage system, and cleaning the interior of the length of the tunnel.

Traffic delays will be scheduled throughout the duration of the construction project, however, no delays will occur over holidays. Throughout the project, there will be controlled traffic and pilot car operations. The public is urged to drive with caution.

The schedule for the traffic delays is as follows:

Sunday evenings from 10 p.m. to Friday afternoons at 4:30 p.m.

  • 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., 2 hour delays
  • 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., 15 minute delays
  • 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., 30 minute delays

Weekend traffic delays are not anticipated at this time. However, this could change, pending construction phasing and progression.
