County Fire Engine Returning to Jerseydale

Mariposa County is targeting October 1 to place an additional engine at the station, while the Forest Service plans $4.5 million in facility improvements.

A county fire engine is set to return to Jerseydale, adding a local resource at a station that already houses U.S. Forest Service engines.

Mariposa County Fire is targeting October 1 to place Engine 429 at the Sierra National Forest station at 6440 Jerseydale Road. The move restores a county engine to the location after the previous county apparatus was removed several years ago, according to a revised September 18 announcement.

Engine 429 will join the Forest Service’s currently staffed Type 3 engines, Engine 311 and Engine 312. The placement adds county equipment alongside those existing federal resources.

The incoming apparatus is a 2009 Pierce Contender, designated as a Type 1 engine, with a 750-gallon water tank and a pump rated at 1,260 gallons per minute.

The placement follows an Insurance Services Office evaluation earlier this year that raised concerns about fire-protection resources in the Jerseydale and Mt. Bullion areas. ISO evaluates community fire-protection capabilities for the insurance industry, including the availability and distribution of department resources.

The county says it is providing ISO with updated information about its stations and apparatus, including the planned Jerseydale placement. Those resources can factor into insurers’ assessments of fire risk, although the announcement does not promise a change in insurance premiums.

The county and Sierra National Forest are proceeding under an informal arrangement and will work toward a formal agreement. Separately, the Forest Service has awarded a $4.5 million contract to upgrade the Jerseydale station’s facilities, with completion planned during 2026–2027.

For residents, the announcement represents an addition to the area’s fire-response resources as the county works to position equipment throughout Mariposa County. Read the county’s revised announcement.
