Coroner’s Report: Fatality on SR-49 North & Pegleg Road

MARIPOSA COUNTY — On April 28, 2022, at approximately 2:40 p.m., the Merced Communication Center (MCC) received a call of a traffic collision on SR-49 north of Pegleg Road. Officers from the California Highway Patrol Mariposa Area responded to the scene and investigated the crash.

Preliminary investigation shows that a 33-year-old male was riding his motorcycle northbound on SR-49 north of Pegleg Road in Mariposa County. The rider was traveling at a high rate of speed and was passing other northbound traffic. Verna Fellows was driving south on SR-49 preparing to turn left onto a private driveway. Ms. Fellows was in the process of making a left turn when the motorcycle collided with the right side of her Toyota pickup. The rider was ejected from the motorcycle and sustained fatal injuries in the collision.

Neither alcohol nor drug influence is currently suspected in causing or contributing to the collision. All parties are believed to have been using the legally required safety or restraint devices. The cause of the collision is under investigation.
