COARSEGOLD — The third annual PRCA-sanctioned Coarsegold Stampede kicks off on Friday, Sept. 14 and continues Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 15 and 16.
In addition to pro rodeo both days, the Stampede will have vendor booths, food trucks, kids’ area and activities, rodeo royalty, a cornhole tournament, cowboy church, mutton bustin’ and two rodeo dances with live music. New this year is full contact jousting on view, provided by Knights of Mayhem.
Grand Marshals of the Stampede this year are Jill and Earl Satterfield, who have been attending the Coarsegold rodeo since 1986. Jill’s been working on the rodeo committee since 1990, hawking hot dogs, tickets and brews. In 2013 Jill was the vice-president of the rodeo committee, and in 2014 she was president for a two-year term. Earl helps out with everything, Jill says, and is present and accounted for on all work days.
Currently in charge of vendors for the rodeo, Jill plans to remain on the committee for “as long as they will have me.” The couple is deeply touched to have been chosen as Grand Marshals for 2018.
“I was overwhelmed and beyond surprised,” Jill says, about finding out they’d been selected for the honor. “I actually had to walk away from the meeting. Earl and my family are happy and proud.”
The Satterfields’ children and their spouses will attend the rodeo this weekend, including Earl, Cassie, Courtney, Kenny, Jocelyn and Nick. Also along for the ride are the grandkids: Ruby, Chloe, Tallulah, Dotty, Ellie and Earl.
The Satterfields’ favorite element of the rodeo? Definitely, it’s the people, Jill says. And they also love the bull riding.
The culmination of PRCA rodeo is the national finals, held in Las Vegas for ten days annually at the end of the season.
