CHP Targets Distracted Drivers

CALIFORNIA – Central Valley California Highway Patrol officers issued 405 distracted driving citations during two enforcement operations over the Labor Day weekend.

ln an effort to save lives and eliminate distracted driving around school zones, the CHP saturated those areas also. “Operation No Cell Phones Around Schools” took place Monday, Aug. 25 through Friday, Aug. 29.

This five day campaign focused on the number one killer of teens in America; reckless and distracted driving.

During this operation, CHP officers issued 172 citations for motorists who were talking on their cell phones, 19 citations for drivers who were texting, and 32 citations for “other distracted driving.”

“Operation Cell Free Friday, Saturday and Sunday” took place during the busy Labor Day weekend. CHP officers vigilantly enforced distracted driving violations throughout the Central Valley.

Officers issued 305 citations to motorists who were talking on their cell phones, 7 citations for drivers under the age of 18 talking on their cell phones, 39 citations for drivers who were texting, 54 citations for “other distracted driving” violations, and made two DUI arrests out of enforcement stops for motorists who were talking on their cell phones and determined to be driving while intoxicated.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
