Chimney Fire Fortunately Contained

OAKHURST — What started as a cozy fire on a rainy day turned into a call to the fire department. At approximately 1 p.m. today, as emergency crews were already responding to a multi-vehicle accident in Coarsegold, firefighters were alerted to respond to reports of a structure fire on Laurel Drive.

Engine 12 out of Oakhurst was among the first on scene, and determined that the fire was confined to the chimney. Once that distinction was made, and there was no additional threat to the structure or surrounding area, resources not already on scene were cancelled.

According to responders, the incident amounted to a chimney fire caused by the build-up of creosote and ash, rendering the chimney unable to properly vent. Fortunately for the residents, the fire did not spread and, once firefighters opened up the chimney, quick work was made to extinguish the flames. The fire was reportedly out by 1:30 p.m.
