Chawanakee Welcomes New Interim Superintendent

Submitted by Marshall Newton, student journalist with Minarets Press

O’NEALS – Chawanakee Unified School District has a new Interim-Superintendent: Dr. Stephen Foster. While he may seem new to some, he is actually the former Chawanakee Superintendent and, as explained by principal Daniel Ching, “He was instrumental in the building and design of Minarets.”

Dr. Foster will be acting superintendent until the school board finds a permanent superintendent. There is a rigorous process to become a superintendent, and the school board has hired a search firm to help them through the process. This group surveys and interviews the community, including staff, teachers, parents, board members, to find out the best characteristics and qualifications for the incoming superintendent. They then receive applications and match it to the criteria outlined by the community. Before they choose who will get the job, they proceed with an extensive background check.

That’s how Dr. Foster became a superintendent the first time. This time, however, the board personally reached out and asked him to do it serve in the interim. His job is to give “leadership, guidance, and oversight to the whole district,” explained Ching. Dr. Foster works with the school board to manage budgets for staffing, safety, transportation, facilities, and programs. He loves his work and has been with Chawanakee as a teacher, vice principal, principal, and he was superintendent until the first graduating class of Minarets.

Although we won’t have him for too long, Dr. Foster is a great fit for Chawanakee Unified as we look for our future superintendent.
