Celebration of Life for Walter Winthrop Reimer

Walt Reimer

Walter Winthrop Reimer died in Fresno, California, on July 1, 2021. He was 85 years old.

Walt was born on September 6, 1935, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He graduated from South Hampton High School and became a watchmaker in Owens Sound in 1952, He married Marlene Betty Fritzsch on February 24, 1954, and settled into family life in Owens Sound with their son, Steven Mark and daughter, Leigh.

After visiting his two brothers in California, Walt and Marlene chose to move to Ventura in 1965 where he began his career as an Allstate insurance agent. In 1984, when Allstate inaugurated independent agencies, he opened his own office where he could employ his wife and daughter in a family business. After working all day at the office, Walt would spend his evenings soliciting new business door-to-door.

Walt immersed himself in the community as an active member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Ojai, Habitat for Humanity, and the local Rotary. He continued his Rotary service for 40 years. He even chaired the Ojai Fourth of July Parade before he had acquired his U.S. citizenship. Together with Marlene, they enjoyed traveling all over the world and also throughout California as members of the Ventura and San Joaquin Miata Clubs.

Walt was passionate about his love of God and country. He never shied away from a spirited political discussion. Likewise, he was always the first to volunteer for church work projects and fellowship activities. At Christ Church Anglican in Oakhurst, he served as a Vestry member, usher, and coordinated the weekly coffee hours. He and Marlene served as chaperones for the Disneyland Youth Trip and always hosted the annual Christmas caroling parties at their home.

Walt is survived by his wife, Marlene; son Steven Mark of Rutherford, North Carolina and daughter Leigh Schettler of Oakhurst, California; grandchildren Caleb Reimer, Amanda Reimer, Travis Schettler and Erin Schettler; and great-grandchildren Benjamin Schettler and Leviticus Schettler.

A funeral celebrating his life will be held at Christ Church Anglican on September 11th at 3:00 p.m. The family would be grateful for donations to Christ Church Anglican in lieu of flowers.
