Stevenson Falls Hike

Stevenson Falls cascades down 300 feet above the road and another 200 feet below the bridge. That is a lot of water! The first wildflowers of the spring season were an added bonus.

In Search of the Lone Sequoia. . .

We searched and found the Lone Giant Sequoia near Fish Camp! I had heard of it but had never ventured into the Miami Motorcycle Trails Area and was curious what was there. Don’t let the word “motorcycle” scare you off from venturing into this off road vehicle area. We only saw one on our adventure. If you are looking for ...

Bennettville to Spuller Lake Snow & Ice Hike

Almost a year ago, the Tioga Pass was still open and we could access a winter wonderland in the high country. The Tioga Pass is closed for the winter now, but I am revisiting another one of those hikes we made in December 2011 from the old ghost town and mining community of Bennettville, passing by frozen lakes and waterfalls ...

And, we were the only people up at Glacier Point, which is normally pretty crowded in the summer!

Before we hit the trail, we took a leisurely walk along the Merced River, capturing reflections of fall colors, along with a critter or two along the way.

Gaylor Lakes & Great Sierra Mine Hike: Part 2

Although prospecting efforts were made in the Tioga area as early as 1860, it was not until 1878 when claims were made and the Tioga Mining District was formed. The City of “Dana” received a Post Office in 1880. In 1881, the Great Sierra Consolidated Silver Company bought up all of the claims in the Tioga Hill area and started ...

Gaylor Lakes & Great Sierra Mine Hike: Part 1

Fresh fallen snow created incredible views of the Tioga Pass area for us, revealing snow covered mountains hiding in clouds that reflected in the high mountain lakes. As we explored the old abandoned Great Sierra Mine, we got a small feel for what those hard working miners lived through in those cold winters in the ghost town of Dana City ...
