Cashier Not Fooled By Fictitious Check

MADERA COUNTY – An alleged identity thief caught trying to pass a doctored check is due in court tomorrow in Bass Lake.

Sheriff deputies arrested Matthew Howard Barker, 38, of Fresno, last week after he presented an altered driver’s license in an attempt to pass a phony check in Coarsegold, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

A sharp-eyed cashier, who was not easily duped, quickly alerted authorities.

One call to the bank’s fraud department confirmed the checking account number to be authentic, but the actual holder of the account had a different name. Both the check and driver’s license had the same last name, but the true account holder had a different first name.

According to jail records, Barker is scheduled to make his first court appearance in Madera County Superior Court Sierra Division at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 30. He is out on bail after posting his $15,000 bond last Friday.
