California Restaurant Month Spotlight: South Gate Brewing Co.

Madera County is home to waterfalls, giant trees and culinary royalty. In honor of California Restaurant Month, happening throughout January, SNO presents a special series spotlighting each participating restaurant.

OAKHURST — South Gate Brewing Company has been filling up our community for the better part of the last decade. To say that their seasonally changing menu and handcrafted beer are a favorite with the locals, would not be overstating it. This American gastro-pub has been serving up exceptional food and award-winning beers since 2013.

South Gate’s menu keeps it simple, packing big flavors and locally sourced ingredients on to each plate, or bowl. (We love their ramen noodle nights). It’s not just the food that is receiving a local touch at this restaurant. Acclaimed, Brewmaster Rick Boucke takes no shortcuts when it comes to crafting the over 11 beers in their seasonal draft lineup. Each beer has a unique character. Take the 1864 Amber Lager, named for the year that the Yosemite Grant was signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln. It is brewed with hops sourced from Yosemite’s Wawona region. It doesn’t get more local than that.

In honor of California Restaurant Month, South Gate Brewing proudly celebrates the return of the James Blonde IPL. What’s an IPL, you ask?
Well, we are so glad you did. An IPL is an Indian Pale Lager. Similar to an Indian Pale Ale in its hoppy flavor, but slow-brewed, in the style of a lager. Lagers take longer to brew than ales.

During the winter months, as the busy tourist season slows, Brewmaster Rick has time to slow down and produce this fan-favorite. Stop in and enjoy a pint, or take home a growler.

Meet the makers on Thursday, Feb. 13, at the Winter Beer Dinner. This intimate, sit down will feature five decadent courses created by Executive Chef Michael Farr, masterfully paired with five hand-selected brews by Brewmaster Rick Boucke.

Advanced reservations for the Winter Beer Dinner necessary as this event will sell out. Reserve your seats before February 10 to ensure your table.

Spend an evening feeling like a part of the family at South Gate Brewing Company. You’ll be glad you did.
