MADERA/MARIPOSA COUNTIES – Following recent rain, Cal Fire’s Madera-Mariposa-Merced Unit has lifted the suspension of burning within State Responsibility Area (SRA) within Eastern Madera and Mariposa Counties effective Monday, Nov. 17.
Hazard reduction burning in Eastern Madera County will be allowed with a valid San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District permit.
While cooler temperatures have helped to diminish the threat of wildfire, residents are asked to use caution while conducting debris burns.
Burn permits are required for all burning projects and residents must follow local burning requirements and maintain control of their fire at all times. Property owners may be held liable if a fire escapes their control and/or burns the property of a neighbor.
Residential Burning Requirements:
• Only dry, natural, vegetative material such as leaves, pine needles and tree trimmings that originated on the property may be burned. Do not burn material that is wet or damp, as this can cause excessive smoke. Excessive smoke is prohibited and will result in penalties.
• Do not use any flammable liquid (such as gasoline or diesel fuel) to ignite a fire.
• Make sure the burn pile is free of prohibited materials: No household trash, garbage or construction materials.
• Piles will be no larger than four (4) feet in diameter.
• Provide clearance around the pile that is ten (10) feet in diameter by removing all material that will burn, down to bare mineral soil.
• Have a water source on hand such as a charged garden hose or a minimum of a five (5) gallon backpack, pump type water extinguisher.
• A responsible adult must be in attendance at all times.
• NEVER burn on windy days.
Burn Permits Required
Contact your nearest Cal Fire station and/or local fire department to acquire the proper permit. Property owners conducting hazard reduction burning are responsible for checking the burn day status by calling the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District burn line at 1-877-429-2876 prior to igniting their hazard reduction pile.
If favorable burn conditions change, Cal Fire will suspend burning until favorable conditions return. Cal Fire is closely monitoring fire and weather conditions daily.
